Creator of Brady Bunch tiki necklace cursed!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

brand bunch tiki necklaceEd No, a tiki sculptor and fan of the Brady Bunch, recreated the tiki idol found in the famous episode where the family goes to Hawaii. And just like Greg, he’s suffered bad luck ever since.

He tried selling the item on eBay to other fans, only to have unscruplous buyers purchase his idol, duplicate it, then have him kicked off the site so they could sell their inferior version in its place.

He has only handful of the necklaces left, which are maticulously sculpted and painted to match the ones in the episode.

$20.00, which includes USPS shipping.

Luau restaurant returns to Beverly Hills

Luau restaurant, Beverly Hills

In April of 2007, Beverly Hills, California, lost its beloved Trader Vic’s. Now a little over a year later, a restauranteur is resurrecting another famous tiki hotspot from the area’s past, Luau. At first blush, I can’t decide if I like that parts that have stayed the same more than those that have been updated.

The drink menu is coming back in classic style and correctly mixed with the assistance of Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, who is known for cracking the codes used by secretive bartenders who were rightfully protective of their recipes.

Everything else has been brought into the post-modern era: the food menu is new and the interiors are wonderful mix of primitive and upscale. The excesses of the old style of interior design have been swept away and replaced by new ones, including a chandelier made of 33 pufferfish!

Luau opens to the public this Friday, October 24.

Another California city votes down tiki

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Surfer-erected tiki in Capitola, CaliforniaSurfers in Capitola, California, erected a 3-foot tall tiki on city park property facing the beach. Although popular with the locals, the city council has voted to remove the statue, as it was put in without proper permits. A last-minute effort was made to approve the tiki through the arts council, but Mayor Kirby Nicol stood firm, “I could put a statue in Noble Gulch Park and get the same treatment. It’s not good government.”

This is the second tiki in California in 2008 that a city has voted to remove. Last week we reported how the city of Oceanside decided to remove two trees that a homeowner had carved tikis into. What’s happening in California?
