Tiki Bar & Lounge, Melbourne, Australia

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Tiki Lounge and Bar, AustraliaTiki Bar & Lounge is Melbourne’s only classic tiki bar, which happens to be located in a dance studio!

Don’t be taken aback though — Kevin, the head bartender, knows how to mix drinks the right way, with fresh ingredients and attention to detail. When the space isn’t offering cabaret shows or dance classes along with the cocktails, the bar plays a selection of Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman tunes over the stereo — something very hard to find in today’s exotica-unfriendly world.

Sam’s Seafood reopens to rave reviews

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Sam’s SeafoodWhen Sam’s Seafood in Huntinton Beach, California closed down last year, long-time patrons were sad to see another classic tiki bar/restaurant wiped off the face of the map. Rumors of the restaurant’s purchase fueled speculation of what was to come — and fortunately for all, the best elements of the location were preserved (the decor and drinks) while the worst have been fixed (the food, which had been described as lackluster at best).

New owner Josh Peasley and Executive Chef Thomas Ortega have skillfully made the “new” Sam’s Seafood far better than the original, according to OC Weekly restaurant critic Edwin Goei.

Funhauser Decor store sells tiki in Vancouver, B.C.

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

Funhauser, Vancoucer, B.C.Tiki Talk reader Megz Majewski emailed me to tell everyone about Funhauser Decor, a store in the Chinatown district of Vancouver, B.C. that sells a nice variety of tiki goods. There doesn’t seem to be a ton of places for tiki fans in B.C. to get their fix, so a visit is definately worth it.

Rambutan, Sydney, Australia

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

RambutanThe food critic for the Sydney Morning Herald, who pines for a real tiki bar Down Under, has a lot of good things to say about this Thai restaurant with enough of a tiki feel to get him by. The bar serves Thai-twists on tropical drinks, like a Pina Colada that uses coconut cream, ginger and lemon bitters instead of pineapple juice.

In the review, Dan Kaufman says:

I don’t like to gush (it messes with my world-weary, cynical, man-of-the-world image) but Rambutan is the most impressive bar I’ve been to for a while. If only little plastic monkeys and elephants were perched on the rims of the cocktail glasses, I’d be in tiki heaven.

That’s got to be the most positive review of any restaurant I’ve read in a while.

Disney to open resort on Ohau

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Disney Hawaii ResortLate last week, Disney announced that it’s building a new resort hotel on the island of Ohau in Hawaii. How the company is going to handle this will be interesting — they’ve were one of the forces behind the polynesian-pop phenomena of the ’50s thanks to the Enchanted Tiki Room — yet all the press about the project emphases how culturally sensitive they’re trying to be, so there may not be any of Rolly Crump’s tiki gods hidden in the bushes (but then you never know.)

Looking closely at the rendering, it looks as if the early plans are to build an eloborately-themed, thatched main building with more normal-looking wings radiating out from either side, much like the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Walt Disney World in Orlando. In the pool area there appears to be some kind of erupting volcano, so there’s a little bit of kitch in the mix. Could a luau dinner show be part of the plans?

There’s probably more great details in that rendering waiting to be revealed, if the picture wasn’t the size of a postage stamp.
