Ancient Visions tiki collection

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Ancient Visions tiki collectionI wouldn’t ever have associated “Rustic Home Furnishings” with tiki, but Ancient Visions, a company in Arizona, sells a pretty unique collection of tiki merchandise on their website.

The matching pieces include a 3-piece bathroom set (toothbrush holder, soap pump, and soap dish) a 4-pack of coffee mugs, salt & pepper shakers, a scorpion bowl, spoon rest, sushi tray, and tissue holder. Sounds like the perfect thing for a tiki party in the bathroom.

$9.00 – $39.00

Shag documentary The Sophisticated MisfitDirector Mark Chervinsky spent four years on and off with Shag, the acclaimed ex-graphic designer turned fine artist whose work is filled with 1960s idolatry: tikis, go-go girls, and 6-wheeled ATVs. The result is Sophisticated Misfit, a 60-minute look into the artist’s life and work, featuring celebrity collectors and proponents of tiki culture.

A $45.00 ticket to the premier also gets you into an after party.

The Reef, Boise, Idaho

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

The Reef, Boise, IdahoThe Reef Restaurant in Boise, Idaho has been fully decked out and decorated in tiki regalia since its opening in 2004 and now the menu has finally been updated to match.

Owner and tiki lover Dave Krick hired Chef de cuisine Nathan Whitley, who transformed the menu to have a polynesian/asian flair. The featured appetizers now are Tahitian drumsticks and a pupu platter with Crab Rangoon, chicken skewers, and cocoanut shrimp — not too far off from what a traditional polynesian restaurant would offer. Staple entrees include miso-glazed Alaskan sea bass and one other holdout from the original menu, jerk chicken, brined and grilled and served with wasabi mashed potatoes. The rest of the entrees are seasonal.

From what I can tell, the restaurant’s bar has a line of signature drinks which includes the classics: Mai Tai, Zombie, and Scorpion Bowl, which appear to be served in tiki mugs. The rooftop patio looks like a great place to drink them too.

Surf guitar legend Dick Dale will be performing at the restaurant on May 2. Tickets are $27.

Don Ho (1930–2007)

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Don HoAsk the average person to name a Hawaiian song and inevitably they choose “Tiny Bubbles,” the infamously catchy song about champagne. Although Ho didn’t write the song, it became his signature tune in 1966 when it charted at #8 on both the Pop and Easy Listening Billboard charts.

Born Donald Tai Loy Ho, Don grew up in O’ahu, leaving for a year for college in the states before returning to the islands and getting his bachelor’s degree at the University of Hawaii. Ho joined the Air Force after college but left after his mother passed away. Ho’s parents owned a club, Honey’s, and Ho’s father asked him to sing at the club in order to attract business. Ho continued to perform in Hawaii and make television appearances for the rest of his life.

Diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in 2005, he fought the disease with several treatments, including experimental stem cell treatment. He died of heart failure on Saturday in Waikiki.

Tiki Farm still has a couple of Don Ho drinkware items in stock: Ho-Waiian Don ($22.95) from the Hawaiian Idols series, Don Ho’s Tiki Mug and Don Ho’s Suck ‘em Up Glass ($8.99 and $2.99 respectively) are both hugely discounted but probably won’t last long now that the singer has passed.

Tiki Objects by Bosko

Friday, April 13th, 2007

Bosko Wall MaskCalifornia artist Bosko is one of the granddaddys of the new generation of tiki artists, having been active since the mid-1990s. In less than 10 years, Bosko has become the “go to” guy for tiki decor.

His shields and masks, reminiscent of the products created by mid-century company Witco, have led to numerous full-scale decorating jobs, including the Taboo Cove bar in Las Vegas.

Through his website, Bosko sells his shields, carved tikis, one-of-a-kind tiki mugs, and everything else needed to throw a luau or turn a room into a home Polynesian bar.
