Dollar Tree tiki party invitations

Friday, April 28th, 2006

Dollar Tree tiki party invitationsDollar Tree stores now carry a line of luau themed party invitations, napkins, plates and cups featuring a tiki. The store I was in also had an assortment of plastic leis.

The illustration on the items is surprisingly nice from a store that tends to smell like my grandmother’s closet (maybe that’s just the location I visited).

Most of the items cost, you guessed it, $1.

Adobe Illustrator CS2 Shag-like tiki symbol library

Thursday, April 27th, 2006

Adobe Illustrator CS2 tiki symbol libraryI was noodling around looking through some of Adobe Illustrator CS2’s menus the other day looking for new stuff and made a discovery: there is now a collection of Tiki symbols included in the symbol library!

There are 20 symbols in all that are obviously knock off’s inspired by the artist Shag. Besides the hut pictured here, there is also a tiki, a palm tree, a cocktail, and some non-tiki stuff too like a French poodle. I’m not familiar enough with the licensing agreement that came with the software to know if they can be used royalty free, but now that the cat is out of the bag, you can bet I’ll be seeing them everywhere.

To access the symbols, go to Window > Symbol Libraries > Tiki

Thor Heyerdahl’s grandson to recreate Kon-Tiki voyage

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

Olav Heyerdahl (or Jimmy Fallon?)The grandson of famed explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who sailed the Pacific Ocean in a balsa raft to prove his theory that the South Pacific was populated by voyagers from South America, is preparing to recreate the feat six decades later.

While the design of Olav Heyerdahl’s ship, Tangaroa, is primitive, it’s outfitted with satellite navigation and communications and solar panels to generate electricity. The ship’s sail has also be redesigned to more closely match prehistoric Peruvian designs that have been unearthed since Thor’s voyage in 1947, which will give the sailors far more directional control than Kon-Tiki had.

The voyage will be filmed for a documentary.

Tiki Bingo online gambling

Monday, April 24th, 2006

Tiki Bingo online gamingHere’s a odd one — a gambling gaming company based out of New Zealand runs a tiki-themed online bingo parlor.

Tiki Bingo is apparently one of the most popular online casinos. It specializes in bingo, but also has scratch cards, slots, multi-line, multi-reel progressives and video poker, as well as live chat with other players.

The branding is cute, but I didn’t venture much further past the homepage. It looks like it may be for Windows-computers only.
